Where to Stay: Katoomba or Leura?

Stay in Katoomba for the station, Echo Point and Scenic World; in Leura for a quieter village and the cafes; in Blackheath for the Grand Canyon walk. Maps and the trade-offs.

Updated October 2026

For most visitors the answer is Katoomba: it has the station, it is the closest town to Echo Point, the Three Sisters and Scenic World, and the hop-on hop-off Explorer Bus starts there. Stay in Leura, one stop east, if you would rather have a quiet village of gardens and cafes and do not mind a short train or bus ride to the lookouts. Stay in Blackheath if the point of the trip is the Grand Canyon track or Govetts Leap. And if you are only doing a day trip, a hotel in the Sydney CBD near Central station or the tour pickups is the one that matters.

Staying in Katoomba

Katoomba is the biggest town on the ridge and the one built around the cliffs: Katoomba Street runs from the station down towards Echo Point, with cafes, shops and the grand old hotels near the top. From a Katoomba base you can be at the Three Sisters for sunrise, walk the Prince Henry Cliff Walk to Scenic World, and catch the Explorer Bus, which leaves Katoomba at 9:15am (stops 1 to 6 only) and then hourly from 9:45am to 4:45pm (October 2026). Its day pass is rated 4.5 from 317 reviews, from US$41 (checked October 2026):

The evening before you head up: if you are coming from Sydney, a free walking tour of The Rocks and the harbour is a good use of the afternoon; booking is free and the guides work for tips. See the free walking tours in Sydney.

Stay close to the station for the trains, or down towards Echo Point for the lookouts at dawn:

Staying in Leura

Leura is the village one stop east of Katoomba: the Leura Mall, a street of cafes, galleries and gardens, starts at the station, and the Leura Cascades and Gordon Falls, where the Prince Henry Cliff Walk ends, are a walk away. It is quieter at night than Katoomba and the better choice for a couple’s weekend. For Echo Point and Scenic World, take the train one stop, the Explorer Bus, or walk the cliff-top track.

Staying in Blackheath

Blackheath is two stops past Katoomba and the base for the Grose Valley side of the mountains: Govetts Leap, Evans Lookout and the 6.3 km Grand Canyon loop (NSW National Parks). Note that the Govetts descent and parts of Rodriguez Pass are closed after rockfalls and landslides (NSW National Parks alert, updated 20 October 2026). The best walks.

Or stay in Sydney and do a day trip

If you are going up and back in a day, the hotel that matters is in Sydney. Near Central for the trains on the Blue Mountains Line; around Darling Harbour, Pitt Street or The Rocks for the tour pickups, which start from about 6:40am.

Should you stay overnight at all?

Stay if you want sunrise or sunset at the lookouts, a long walk like the Grand Canyon track, or a slower pace; skip it if the classic sights are enough, because one day covers them. Is the Blue Mountains worth a day trip? weighs the two.
