Scenic World is open every day of the year, from 10am to 4pm on weekdays and 9am to 5pm at weekends, in NSW school holidays and on public holidays. What are the four rides?

  • Scenic Railway. The one everybody comes for: a carriage that drops into the Jamison Valley down a 52-degree incline, which Scenic World calls the steepest passenger railway in the world. It was built for coal mining in the 1880s and became a tourist ride in 1945. Departures are every 10 minutes from the top and bottom stations.
  • Scenic Walkway. Rainforest boardwalks on the valley floor, between the Railway and the Cableway: 10, 30 or 50-minute loops, the shortest accessible route about 500 m.
  • Scenic Cableway. An enclosed cable car from the valley floor back up the cliff.
  • Scenic Skyway. A cable car across the gorge between two clifftops, with views of Katoomba Falls and the Three Sisters.

Most people go down on the Railway, walk the boardwalk and come up on the Cableway, then ride the Skyway out and back. Allow about two hours.

Is the Scenic Railway worth it?

Yes, once. It is short, steep and genuinely startling, and the boardwalk at the bottom is the easiest way into the rainforest of the valley floor without a steep walk. It is less good value if you are a walker: the free tracks from Echo Point and Katoomba Falls reach the same cliffs. Families and first-time visitors get the most out of it; on wet days the Railway and some walkways can close for safety (scenicworld.com.au).

Scenic World sits on the cliff edge west of Echo Point; the Prince Henry Cliff Walk (red) links the two.
  • Hours: 10am to 4pm on weekdays; 9am to 5pm at weekends, in NSW school holidays and on public holidays; longer in busy periods (as early as 8:45am to 6pm). Open every day, including Christmas Day.
  • Last rides: leave the top station 20 minutes before closing and the valley 10 minutes before closing; the longer boardwalks start closing an hour before.
  • Prams: not allowed on the Railway, though a small folding stroller that fits on your lap is; you can leave a pram in the building.
  • Getting there: free parking in the multi-storey car park (2 m clearance). Without a car, the Explorer Bus and local buses from Katoomba station stop at Scenic World.
