The Blue Mountains with Kids

A family day in the Blue Mountains: Scenic World's rides, the Three Sisters walk, koalas at Featherdale (A$49 adult, A$29 child, Oct 2026), and which tours take children.

Updated October 2026

Yes, the Blue Mountains is good for kids, as long as you plan the day around the rides, the short walks and the animals rather than the long tracks. Scenic World’s railway and cable cars, the 0.8 km Three Sisters walk at Echo Point and a wildlife park on the way back make an easy family day from Sydney. Check the age limits before you book a tour: several of the walking tours take no young children.

The family day we would book is the Scenic World, zoo and koala photo tour, rated 4.8 from 2,973 reviews, from US$148 in current promotion (usually US$161) (checked October 2026). All the entries are included, the stops are short, and the day ends on a ferry along Sydney Harbour rather than in traffic.

What is there to do with kids?

  • Scenic World, Katoomba. The Scenic Railway down the 52-degree incline is the highlight for most children, followed by the Skyway’s glass floor and the rainforest boardwalks. Child tickets (ages 3 to 15) start at A$38.40 and under-3s are free (scenicworld.com.au, October 2026). Prams cannot go on the Railway, though a small folding stroller on your lap can; you can leave a pram in the building. Scenic World tickets.
  • The Three Sisters walk. 0.8 km return from Echo Point, 25 to 45 minutes; the first 400 m to Oreades lookout are on a gentle slope (NSW National Parks). Hold small hands near the cliff edges.
  • Katoomba Cascades and Katoomba Falls. Boardwalks and stepping stones below the falls, near Scenic World.
  • Wentworth Falls lookouts. The level first part of the Wentworth Falls track reaches two lookouts before the steps down to Fletchers Lookout, which suits older children better.

Koalas and kangaroos: Featherdale Wildlife Park

Featherdale is in Doonside in western Sydney, on the way to the mountains, and many Blue Mountains day trips stop there. It is open from 8am to 5pm every day; entry is A$49 for an adult and A$29 for a child aged 3 to 15, children 2 and under free, with 10% off online with the code on its site (featherdale.com.au, checked October 2026). The tours that stop there allow about an hour to an hour and a half, which is enough for the kangaroo enclosures, the koalas and the wombats.

Can you hold a koala in Sydney?

No. In New South Wales, members of the public do not hold koalas; the wildlife parks offer close encounters and photos instead. At Featherdale the Koala Experience, a short session with a keeper in which you can pat a koala and take home a photo pack, starts at A$40 per photo for up to six people, and the Koala Kindy encounter for ages 10 and up starts at A$200 (featherdale.com.au, October 2026). The zoo tour above includes a digital photo beside a koala at Sydney Zoo.
