The Best Blue Mountains Walks for a Day Trip
Four Blue Mountains walks that fit a day from Sydney: the Three Sisters, Wentworth Falls, the Prince Henry Cliff Walk and the Grand Canyon track, with the closures listed Oct 2026.
For a day trip from Sydney, the best walks are short and close to the stations: the Three Sisters walk at Echo Point (0.8 km, 25 to 45 minutes), the Wentworth Falls track to Fletchers Lookout (1.4 km return, under an hour) and a stretch of the Prince Henry Cliff Walk between Katoomba and Leura. If you have the whole day and good legs, the Grand Canyon track at Blackheath, a 6.3 km loop of three to four hours, is the best walk in the mountains (all figures from NSW National Parks). Before you go, check the closures: several valley tracks near Wentworth Falls are shut after landslides.

If you would rather walk with a guide and not worry about trains and track notes, the walking day from Sydney does a 90-minute waterfall walk at Wentworth Falls and the Three Sisters, with lunch, from US$85, rated 4.8 from 3,075 reviews (checked October 2026). It takes no children under 14.
What is closed (as of 27 October 2026)
NSW National Parks lists these closures in the areas a day visitor uses (alerts updated 20 October 2026; the landslide closures are due for review on 21 November 2026):
- Wentworth Falls: part of the National Pass west of the Wentworth Falls middle crossing (a major landslide); Wentworth Pass and the Slack Stairs (boardwalk repairs); the Valley of the Waters below Sylvia Falls (rockfall). The classic loop down the falls and back along the National Pass cannot be walked. The Wentworth Falls track to Fletchers Lookout is not on the list.
- Katoomba: Honeymoon Bridge at the Three Sisters (rockfall). Lincolns Rock is closed by Blue Mountains City Council.
- Leura: the Lower Fern Bower track, closed for repairs until 30 October 2026, with no access from Leura Cascades to the valley tracks that way.
- Blackheath: the Govetts descent and parts of Rodriguez Pass (rockfalls and landslides).
Closures change with the weather. Check the NSW National Parks alerts the day before, and never walk into a canyon in or after heavy rain.

What is the easiest walk in the Blue Mountains?
The Three Sisters walk from Echo Point. It is 0.8 km return on a gently sloping path, and the first 400 m to Oreades lookout are accessible with assistance (NSW National Parks). It is the one walk every visitor does. The Three Sisters guide.
Wentworth Falls
The Wentworth Falls track leaves the picnic area on a level path past Jamison and Wentworth lookouts, then goes down about 200 steps to Fletchers Lookout on the cliff edge, at the top of a waterfall that plunges about 100 m to the valley floor. It is 1.4 km return and takes 45 minutes to an hour. Normally you could carry on down to the foot of the falls along the National Pass; with the closures above, plan on going back the way you came. Wentworth Falls station is about 2 km from the picnic area.
The Prince Henry Cliff Walk
The cliff-top track between Katoomba Cascades and Gordon Falls at Leura, 7 km one way, three to four hours, with more than 20 lookouts over the Jamison Valley and three waterfalls (NSW National Parks). You do not have to do all of it: the stretch from Echo Point to Scenic World is short, and you can join or leave it at the lookouts along Cliff Drive.
The Grand Canyon track
The best walk in the mountains for a fit walker with a full day: a 6.3 km loop of three to four hours from the Grand Canyon car park near Blackheath, down along Greaves Creek through a deep, fern-filled sandstone canyon, past waterfalls and stepping stones, and back up to Evans Lookout over the Grose Valley (NSW National Parks). It has been walked since 1907. It is a long day from Sydney by train: Blackheath station is two stops past Katoomba, and the car park is a few kilometres from the station.
